So many spectacle wearers don’t know how to clean their glasses. It is common practice to see people use shirts, napkins, or paper towels.
The problem with these “cleaners” is that they carry dirt and fibres, that can scratch the lenses. So how should it be done?
- Rinse your spectacles under a tap with lukewarm/cold water.
- Put a drop of dishwashing liquid between your fingers and gently wash your spectacle lenses. Do not use any household cleaners.
- Anti-static spray or lens wipes advised by your optometrist can also be used.
- Rinse with lukewarm/cold water and dry with a clean microfibre cloth.
All spectacle lenses will get a few scratches over time from normal use and exposure to the environment, as well as getting dropped.
Lenses are sealed with a scratch-resistant coating, it does not make them scratch-proof.
Heat is a big factor in damaging frames and lens coatings.
Standing too close to a fire, opening an oven, cooking over heat, leaving your spectacles in your car, and using hair dryers while having your spectacles on.
Hairspray can adhere to your lenses when spraying and can be difficult to clean off.
Hand-painted frames like Ronit Fürst or horn-rimmed Lindberg must be cleaned with extra care, do not use any chemical cleaners on them.
Keep your spectacles in their case when not wearing them (dogs and even cats have been known to take them off low tables and chew on them)
Handle your spectacles with care. Always use both hands when putting them on or taking them off.
Try not to fall asleep with your spectacles on.
